THE WAZAN "TA" IN THE WORDS WIQAYAH – WAQA (TAQWA)

We have now entered the final nine days of Ramadan. Following up on our previous discussion regarding the word Taqwa, I would like to present a study using a linguistic approach, specifically analyzing the "Ta" wazan (pattern) within the word Taqwa.

The Wazan (Ta) in Arabic

In Arabic linguistics, a wazan or word pattern is a morphological structure that shows how a word is formed from a root (fi'il mujarrad) by adding specific letters. One significant addition is the prefixing or inclusion of the letter Ta (ت).

Generally, the addition of the letter Ta at the beginning of a root word indicates a shift in meaning toward:

  • Reflexive: An action that reflects back onto the doer.
  • Intransitive: An action that does not require a direct object.
  • Reciprocal: An action involving social interaction between two or more parties.

Breakdown of the Wazan Ta Meanings

1. The Pattern تَفَعَّلَ (Tafa’’ala) – Without Alif

  • Reflexive / Intransitive: Shows that the impact of the action returns to the subject.
    Example: عَلَّمَ (‘allama - to teach) = تَعَلَّمَ (ta‘allama - to learn / teaching oneself).
  • Intensive or Gradual: Performing an action step-by-step or with great earnestness.
    Example: جَمَعَ (jama‘a - to gather) = تَجَمَّعَ (tajamma‘a - to assemble / gather together).

2. The Pattern تَفَاعَلَ (Tafā‘ala) – With Alif

  • Reciprocal (Mutual): Actions performed by two or more parties mutually.
    Example: عَامَلَ (‘āmala - to act/treat) = تَعَامَلَ (ta‘amala - to interact/deal with one another).
  • Pretense: Pretending to perform an action.
Example: نَامَ (nāma - to sleep) = تَنَاوَمَ (tanāwama - to pretend to sleep).

Summary of the (Ta) Prefix

In "augmented" verbs (fi'il mazid), the prefix Ta (ت) provides nuances of:

  • Social Interaction: Mutual action between parties.
  • Self-directed: A reflexive action that returns to the self.

The Wazan in the Word Taqwa

The word Taqwa originates from the Arabic root:

وقى – يقي – وقاية (waqā – yaqī – wiqāyah)

which means to protect, guard, or preserve.

This root then follows the pattern افتعل (Ifta‘ala), becoming:

اتقى – يتقي (ittaqā – yattaqī)

The additional Ta (ت) in this pattern signifies:

  • Earnestness and conscious effort.
  • Self-participation (mutawā‘ah): Actively guarding oneself against harm.

This meaning is not only reflexive (protecting oneself) but also social, guarding both oneself and others from evil or harm.

Deep Meaning of the Taqwa Pattern

  • Effort and Process (Mutawā‘ah): Taqwa is not merely "fear." It is the earnestness in guarding oneself and others from wickedness.
  • Maximum Implementation: The Ta in Taqwa emphasizes action. Taqwa is not a passive fear trapped in the mind; it is a tangible behavior in daily life.

Illustrations of Taqwa in Practice

As discussed in previous sessions, Taqwa can be understood through modern examples:

  • Safety: Wearing a helmet and driving carefully is a form of Taqwa, as it is an effort to guard life.
  • Health: Maintaining a healthy lifestyle and taking preventive measures such as maintaining a healthy lifestyle with food, drink and exercise.

Broader Implementations:

  1. Social: Implementing laws and prohibitions (e.g., against weapons, intoxicants, or harmful social media) and preparing a superior future generation through science and moral education.
  2. Environmental: Preserving nature through reforestation and banning illegal logging or destructive mining.
  3. Disaster Mitigation: Developing guidelines, training, and building infrastructure to prevent or minimize the impact of disasters.

Reflective Questions

Now, we must ask ourselves:

If we observe Shiyam (fasting) during Ramadan but still fail to guard ourselves and others from evil and harm, can it truly be called Taqwa?

Are we truly practicing Taqwa, or are we merely hiding behind private rituals that lack social impact?
