FUAD : REACTION TO TWO USTADZ'S VIDEOS

Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings

Welcome back, I'm Abu Musa.

Today is Monday, January 13, 2025.

We're still discussing "Fuad"

Today we’re going to react to several videos on YouTube. Let's start with the first one from the first Ustadz:

“This body moves, but what controls it is the king – the king is the Qolbu. This king commands, and above this king is another king. That is Fuad. This Fuad is what drives and decides: You do this, you do that. Qolbu changes often, it's called Qolbu because it flips and changes. But when it becomes Fuad, it stands firm.”

So, the first ustadz said that "Fuad" is the essence of all human actions. However, it's important to note that he did not explain "what Fuad is", only its function. Similarly, he didn’t explain what "Qolbu" is either – just its function. But if we refer to Surah Al-Qasas: 10, it clearly states that the "Fuad" of Musa’s mother became empty That verse clearly explains that "Fuad" moved her to reveal her baby to Pharaoh. The first ustadz’s claim contradicts the Qur'an: He said that "Fuad" drives all human behavior – good or bad. But according to the Qur'an, "Fuad" drives emotional and impulsive decisions, especially those not weighed by intellect Let’s hear that part again:

“There is a king above the king, and that is Fuad. Fuad drives and decides: You do this, you do that.”

Alright, let’s react to the second video now:

“Indeed, hearing (sama’), sight (bashar), and then it comes down to Fuad. Fuad means heart. But the heart is called Qolbu, Ustadz. The heart that still flips is called Qolbu – from the word Qalaba, to flip or turn. Go or not? Learn or not? Give charity or not? Pray or not? That’s Qolbu. But the heart that is already calm is called Fuad.”

This second ustadz says that "Qolbu" comes from a root that means "to flip", and that's correct. But when he compares it to things like “Go or not?”, “Study or not?” – those are functions of the "brain", not the heart or liver. Then he says "Fuad" is a calm heart. But again, if we read Surah Al-Qasas: 10, it says "Fuad" made Musa’s mother anxious and empty, not calm. It actually pushed her to hand over her baby to Pharaoh.

So this ustadz seems to draw conclusions based on personal opinion, not full Qur’anic context. To understand a Qur'anic term, you have to read the Now, "Fuad" is always mentioned alongside "hearing" and "seeing" (sama’ and bashar). This shows "Fuad" is "triggered" by what we hear and see. Example: in Surah Al-Qasas: 10 when Musa's mother heard Pharaoh’s decree to kill baby boys and saw soldiers taking newborns, her Fuad kicked in – she panicked and her Fuad became hollow. She wanted to reveal her baby. So, Fuad reacts instinctively, without thinking or evaluating. But when something is thought about, that's the role of Qolbu.

We discussed before that "Qolbu’s" role is to consider, think, and understand yafqahun, ya'qilun yatadabbarun.

That’s why Allah says in Surah Al-Isra: 36

“Do not follow what you have no knowledge of. Indeed, hearing, sight, and Fuad – all of them will be questioned.”

So, Allah SWT informs us that hearing and sight are the first things we use, and then comes the fu'ad (the heart or inner feelings), which acts without knowledge. That is what will be held accountable. What Allah means is this: do not follow something you do not have knowledge of, because hearing, sight, and the fu'ad—all of those will be held accountable.

So, fu'ad refers to something that acts without being weighed, thought over, contemplated, or understood. Therefore, the fu'ad of the Prophet Muhammad was also strengthened through the stories of the prophets and messengers in Surah Hud, verse 120.

“And all the stories of the messengers We relate to you (O Muhammad) to make your Fuad firm. In them is the truth, advice, and reminders for the believers.”

This shows "Fuad" is like instinct – not processed by thought, just immediate reaction. For example, when we see a robbery or violence, our instinct may drive us to hit or attack – that’s "Fuad" Animals have "Fuad" too – but they don’t have "Qolbu". That’s why animals defend their babies instantly when threatened. They don’t think it through – they act on "Fuad". Even in mating, animals don’t consider morality – they may even mate with their own offspring or parents. They act by instinct – that’s "Fuad". Humans have this too, but we are given "qolbu" by Allah – so we can evaluate good vs. bad

That’s why even someone without religion can still do good – because their "Qolbu" works. So then, what’s the role of religion, especially Islam ? As I explained before, religion affirms or validates our actions. What does “affirm” mean? It’s a declaration Example: If Mr. Prabowo affirms Mr. Dulah’s action as good, then he declares it as good. If he affirms it as bad, then he declares it as bad. Religion – especially Islam – affirms whether our actions are good or bad. Sometimes we think something is good, but religion tells us it's actually bad.

For example, in Russia or the US, drinking alcohol is considered normal or even good. But Allah affirms through the Qur'an that such acts are bad. Same with eating things like pork, rats, or bats – some cultures think it’s fine. But Allah affirms that such are bad. So, just because humans believe something is good doesn’t mean it is. That’s why religion is there – to affirm what is actually good or bad.

Take our earlier example of punishing a thief on the street: If people beat them to death, that’s worse than what the thief did. Allah affirms in Surah Al-Ma'idah : 32 “Whoever kills a person – unless it be for murder or for spreading corruption – it is as if he killed all of humanity.”

Also, in Surah Al-Isra : 33 “And do not kill anyone whom Allah has forbidden, except by right.” So even if a thief didn’t kill anyone, killing them is still wrong.

Allah affirms that our impulsive actions – if they’re unjust – are wrong. Same with mating: Islam defines clearly who can and cannot marry Some cultures (like certain Ashkenazi Jews) practice incest – Allah affirms such actions are bad.

Same with competition – in animals, it can get violent. In humans, competition in business, for example, is regulated. Loans and interest (riba) are regulated. Islam prohibits riba, even though other countries allow it. So religion affirms whether human behavior is truly good or bad.

That concludes the reaction to both videos we reviewed. Hopefully, this added insight about "Fuad" will be beneficial to us all.

I'm Abu Musa. Until next time.

Peace be upon you, and Allah's mercy and blessings.
