THE MEANING OF "KITAB" IN THE AL-QUR'AN

Generally, the word kitab is understood as a book. In the Arabic language, this understanding is indeed not incorrect. However, when the word kitab is used in the Al-Qur'an especially when referring to the Al-Qur'an itself its meaning is not as simple as a physical book. The Al-Qur'an was not sent down directly from heaven in the form of a book. So, what is the actual meaning of "kitab" intended by the Al-Qur'an?

The Fundamental Meaning of the Word Kitab

The word kitab is derived from the root words ka-ta-ba, which means to gather separate things and then arrange them into a complete system that possesses a structure, mechanism, and specific themes.

From this, it can be understood that al-Kitab is not merely writing, but rather a concept of a system of general laws that govern:

  • Existence (wujud).
  • Growth/Development.
  • Change.
  • The relationship of cause and effect within the universe.

Al-Kitab is the accumulation of various themes arranged in a single system of law, both globally and partially.

Kitab in the Verses of the Al-Qur'an

This understanding becomes clear when we observe several verses:

• As-Nisa': 103 :

إِنَّ الصَّلَاةَ كَانَتْ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ كِتَابًا مَّوْقُوتًا

"Indeed, salat for the believers is a Kitab Mauqutan (a theme whose time has been determined).".

Salat is called kitab not because it is a piece of writing, but because it is a system of worship that has specific rules regarding time, requirements, and mechanisms.

• Ali Imran: 145 :

وَمَا كَانَ لِنَفْسٍ أَن تَمُوتَ إِلَّا بِإِذْنِ اللَّهِ كِتَابًا مُّؤَجَّلًا

"Every living entity shall die except by the permission of Allah, (in the form of) Kitab Muajal.".

Death exists within the system of kitab, meaning it follows the laws and provisions of existence rather than being a random event.

• Al-A'raf: 34 :

وَلِكُلِّ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلٌ فَإِذَا جَاءَ أَجَلُهُمْ لَا يَسْتَأْخِرُونَ سَاعَةً وَلَا يَسْتَقْدِمُونَ

"Every people has a death. If their death comes, they cannot postpone it and put it first." (Al-A'raf: 34)

• Ar-Ra'd: 38 :

لِكُلِّ أَجَلٍ كِتَابٌ

"For every term (ajal) there is a kitab/theme in the form of the laws of existence.".

These verses show that ajal (term/lifespan) exists within the system of kitab, which is a system of laws of existence that operates based on cause and effect.

Kitab, Declaration (Izin), and Ajal

All material events occurrence, growth, development, and change happen through their respective systems of kitab. Nothing appears suddenly without a cause. Every system of kitab has:

  • A specific theme.
  • Material requirements.
  • A limit of validity.

When material requirements are met, what is called izin (declaration) occurs. Meanwhile, ajal is the end of the validity period of a kitab system, not because the time was predetermined from the start, but because its material conditions have been fulfilled. In other words, ajal is not a mysteriously set date, but the result of a cause-and-effect process within the system of kitab.

Etymological Derivatives in Arabic

From the general meaning of kitab (general laws regarding objective entities of existence), various terms are born: a hotel is called maktab, a school is called maktab, a book is called kitab, writing is called yaktub, themes in fiqh books are called Kitabu Thaharah or Kitabus Sholah, regulations are called kutiba, and those who record are called katibīn. All these terms relate to arrangement, recording, and systematics, not just writing.

Kitab and Natural Laws

With this understanding, Al-Qur'an verses mentioning kitab can be understood rationally, logically, and coherently with the natural laws established by Allah.

"And Allah has created you from dust, then nuthfah, then made couples. Not a woman conceives nor gives birth except with His knowledge. And neither does a person who lives a long life have his life lengthened, nor (not) his life shortened except in KITAB. Indeed, that is very easy for Allah." (Fathir: 11)

For example, Fathir: 11 explains that life from dust, to nutrients, to conception and birth all proceeds within the system of objective existence. Similarly, a lifespan can be long or short depending on material conditions and human choices, such as maintaining health or committing destructive acts.

Kitab and Calamity (Musibah)

• At-Taubah: 51 :

قُل لَّن يُصِيبَنَا إِلَّا مَا كَتَبَ اللَّهُ لَنَا هُوَ مَوْلَانَا ۚ وَعَلَى اللَّهِ فَلْيَتَوَكَّلِ الْمُؤْمِنُونَ

"Say: Nothing will ever happen to us except what (is) in KITAB Allah's for us. He is our protector, and in Allah we put our trust.".

This does not mean Allah grants calamities arbitrarily, but that calamities occur through material cause-and-effect within the system called kitab.

• Al-Hadid: 22 :

مَا أَصَابَ مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ فِي الْأَرْضِ وَلَا فِي أَنفُسِكُمْ إِلَّا فِي كِتَابٍ مِّن قَبْلِ أَن نَّبْرَأَهَا

"No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselves except that it is in KITAB before We bring it into being.".

Natural disasters like earthquakes or tsunamis are phenomena within the system of kitab.

• Asy-Syura: 30 :

وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِّن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ وَيَعْفُو عَن كَثِيرٍ

"And whatever misfortune befalls you, it is because of your own hands, and He forgives most (of your faults).".

While some calamities result from human moral choices (like war or injustice), they still operate through Allah's permission, meaning through the laws of cause and effect.

Conclusion

In the Al-Qur'an, Al-Kitab is not just a book, but:

  1. A system of objective material laws of existence that has structure, themes, mechanisms, and limits.
  2. A framework where all physical phenomena, both global and partial, operate with precision and order.

This information in the Al-Qur'an is written in text form (called Ayat Qauliyah) and is also informed in non-text form (called Ayat Qauniyah).
