SATAN IS CHAINED DURING RAMADAN ?, WHAT THE QUR'AN SAYS

As the month of Ramadan approaches, many preachers frequently cite the following Hadith:

"When Ramadan begins, the gates of Paradise are opened, the gates of Hell are closed, and the devils are shackled." (Narrated by Bukhari no. 1899 and Muslim no. 1079).

In another narration:

"When Ramadan enters, the gates of mercy are opened, the gates of Gehenna are closed, and the devils are tied with chains." (Narrated by Bukhari no. 3277 and Muslim no. 1079).

Traditional Interpretations

Some scholars interpret this Hadith literally (haqiqi): the opening of Heaven's gates and the shackling of devils are physical signs of Ramadan’s sanctity, preventing devils from hindering the believers. Consequently, the devils' influence decreases as they are effectively "prisoners" during this month.

Others offer a more metaphorical view, suggesting that the gates of Heaven "open" because Allah makes acts of obedience such as fasting and nightly prayers easier for His servants. In this view, people are busier with good deeds than sins, which is the path to entering Paradise. Conversely, the closing of Hell's gates and the shackling of devils represent the increased ease with which one can avoid immorality during this period.

These various interpretations often arise from the observable reality that contradicts a literal reading: despite the Hadith stating devils are shackled, sins and evil acts still occur during Ramadan. To resolve this discrepancy, many scholars and preachers reinterpret the Hadith to find a meaning beyond the literal text.

The Need for a Contemporary Perspective

This brings us to a crucial point: time and material reality are constantly evolving (halak). Therefore, our understanding of both the Hadith and the Qur'an must also evolve, even if the original text remains the same. It is vital for the Muslim community to not only rely on past clerical opinions but to also seek fresh understanding aligned with current realities.

Analyzing the Hadith Through the Lens of the Qur'an

As I have discussed in previous studies, "Satan" (Shaytan) can be understood as the property of randomness or entropy within matter. Since humans are material beings, we inherently possess this trait. In the Qur'an, this manifests in two forms:

1. As Individuals (Certain Parties)

In this form, "devils" refers to humans who oppose God. This is clearly stated in QS. Al-Baqarah: 14 and QS. Al-An’am: 112.

· “And when they meet those who believe, they say, 'We believe'; but when they are alone with their evil ones (shayatin), they say, 'Indeed, we are with you; we were only mocking.'” (2:14)

· “And likewise We have made for every prophet an enemy devils (shayatin) from mankind and jinn...” (6:112)

For this individual form, Allah uses the plural term "Shayatin."

2. As Thought (Ideology/Thinking)

In this form, "Satan" represents thoughts and ideologies that oppose God, which can infect even believers. This is referenced in QS. Maryam: 44 and QS. Al-Maidah: 91.

· “O my father, do not worship Satan (Shaython). Indeed Satan has ever been, to the Most Merciful, disobedient.” (19:44)

· “Satan (Shaython) only intends to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer...” (5:91)

For this conceptual form, Allah uses the singular term "Shaython."

Thus, according to the Qur'an, "Satan" is always present either among us as individuals or within us as thoughts.

The Reality of Heaven and Hell

Regarding Heaven and Hell, we must first establish a premise: their existence is tied to the Hereafter (Akhirat). Information in the Qur'an suggests that the Hereafter only begins after the Day of Judgment (Qiyamah).

As stated in QS. Ibrahim: 48:

"[It will be] on the Day the earth will be replaced by another earth, and the heavens [as well], and all creatures will come out before Allah, the One, the Prevailing."

"There is no one in the heavens and the earth, except who will come to God the Most Gracious as a servant. Indeed, Allah has determined their number and counted them with precise calculations. And each of them will come to Allah on the Day of Resurrection individually" (QS. Maryam 93 - 95)

"And those who fear God are taken to heaven in groups (also). So that when they get to heaven the doors are open and the guards say to them: "Prosperity (be bestowed) upon you. Blessed are you! then enter this paradise, while you will abide therein forever." (QS. Zumar: 73)

"Those who are gathered to the Hell of Hell by being dragged along their faces, those are the people in the worst place and the most astray in their ways" (QS. Al-Furqon: 34)

Only then are Heaven and Hell manifested as humans are judged and sorted (QS. Maryam: 93-95, QS. Az-Zumar: 73, and QS. Al-Furqan: 34). Heaven and Hell are the final destinations after the reckoning, which has not yet occurred.

Conclusion

When we verify this Hadith against the Qur'an, we reach a different conclusion: Satan cannot be "shackled" because Satan is an inherent part of our external environment and internal thoughts. Furthermore, Heaven and Hell are not yet "open" or "closed" in a literal sense because the Hereafter has not been created yet.

Verifying Hadith through the Qur'an is essential to ensure that the Ummah does not "overstep" (overstep) or create "overlapping" (overlap) understandings that deviate from the core principles of the Holy Book.
