SATAN IN THE FORM OF INDIVIDUALS AND THOUGHTS
Bismillahirrahmanirrahim
Assalamualaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh
Today is Wednesday, July 2, 2025, specifically in the morning. This morning, we will review the 5th part of the Allah Way of Thinking study, titled Asy-Syaiton (Satan), while also reacting to several videos that we will listen to together.
1. First, let us recall our previous discussion that the word Asy-Syaiton is derived from the root word "Sya-To-Na", where the final letter "Nun" is not an additional letter but an original part of the word. Thus, Sya-To-Na refers to individuals from the nations of Jinn and Humans. While Asy-Syaiton means "to be distant" or "to distance oneself” which makes it an adjective its plural or derivative forms refer to individuals among Jinn and Humans who oppose Allah.
2. Second, Asy-Syaiton can also be derived from the root word "Sya-To" without the "Nun". In this case, the final "Nun" is an additional letter serving as the wazan fa'lan (a linguistic pattern for emphasis). When the "Nun" is added to "Sya-To" to become Asy-Syaiton, the meaning shifts into the form of thought/ideology. This second meaning is rarely discussed in general sermons because many preachers or scholars only refer to Satan as an individual.
To understand further, let’s first discuss Satan in the form of an individual by listening to the following video:
"There are Muslim Jinn and there are disbelieving Jinn... the disbelieving ones are called Satan... their leader is Iblis... they come from the community of Jinn".
The preacher in the video is correct in understanding that Satan exists as individuals in the form of humans or jinn, but he did not mention that Satan also exists in the form of thoughts Satanic Thoughts. As we discussed previously, Allah says in Surah Maryam verse 44: "Do not worship Satan; indeed, Satan is disobedient to Ar-Rahman".
The "Satan" mentioned in Surah Maryam verse 44 refers to Satan in the form of thought, because Satanic thinking always opposes Ar-Rahman. Ar-Rahman is the manifestation of Allah's love in the form of objectivity. For example, if you want to be smart, you must study; if you want to recover from illness, you must seek medical treatment; and if you want money, you must work.
Prophet Ibrahim (Abraham) asked his father, "O my father, do not worship Satan". His father was a maker and worshiper of idols. Prophet Ibrahim called this act "Satan" because idols contradict Ar-Rahman they cannot provide objectivity, such as providing food, rain, intelligence, or healing. Logically and rationally, idols are dead objects. Therefore, Prophet Ibrahim referred to his father's mindset as Satanic thinking.
Meanwhile, the evidence for Satan as an individual can be found in Surah Al-Baqarah verse 14, regarding the hypocrites in Madinah who, when they returned to their "Satans" (leaders), admitted they were only mocking the believers. Another example is in the story of Prophet Sulaiman (Solomon) in Surah Al-Anbiya verse 82, which mentions "Satans" who dove into the sea to work for him.
In the modern era, many individuals act as "Satans" by manipulating Ar-Rahman. For example, a doctor (a form of Allah’s Rahmani) might manipulate medicine for business interests so that a patient does not heal quickly. Education can also be manipulated, such as covering up historical truths for the sake of power this too is called Satan in the form of an individual.
This manipulation also occurs in the world of work through systems created by humans, such as online transportation (taxi online) or content creation systems, which are vulnerable to being "played" by those who control the system. Even in agriculture, "middlemen" who manipulate prices and prevent farmers from selling directly to the market can be categorized as Satanic individuals.
Now, let's discuss Satan in the second form (Thought). This is based on the root word "Sya-To" (2 letters/Lafaz), where the "Nun" is an emphasis on the way of thinking. This can even happen to believers. Therefore, when reading the Qur'an, we are commanded to seek protection from these Satanic thoughts.
Surah An-Nahl verse 98: "When you have read (Qoro'ta) the Qur'an, seek refuge in Allah from Satan the rejected". The word "Qoro'ta" is in the past tense. This means that after reading the Qur'an, we must not have thoughts that contradict Allah’s words. If Allah says A, we must say A, even if human opinions (such as weak/fabricated hadiths) say B.
Examples of areas targeted by Satanic Thoughts:
1. Linking unrelated events: For example, linking a lunar eclipse (natural objectivity) with the death of Prophet Muhammad's son, Ibrahim (human subjectivity). Or linking a rooster crowing with the sunrise.
2. Confusing Qudroh (Ability) and Irodah (Will): Allah is capable of anything, but He does not necessarily "will" to do everything, especially if it contradicts His own laws. For example, Allah is able to make all humans believe, but He does not "will" to do so.
3. Mixing Risalah and Nubuwah: Risalah concerns laws of worship (rituals), while Nubuwah concerns information about God and the universe (science/objectivity). Many people mix them up, such as performing prayers (sholat/sholawat) specifically to get rich or smart. While prayer is an act of obedience, wealth and intelligence are part of Nubuwah which must be achieved through study, research, and objective effort. If you trade in the middle of a forest where there are no people, no amount of prayer will make your goods sell because you ignored the objective laws of Nubuwah (location and economy).
These are the three examples I can share. Please use your brain, rationality, and logic to develop this further. The brain is placed at the highest point of the human body for a reason.
Until we meet again. I am Abu Musa.
