IKHLASH = EXCLUSIVE

The word Ikhlas is a term we use frequently in our daily conversations. For example, we often hear phrases like "one must be clean heart in worship" or "one must be clean heart in helping others". We use this word almost every day when speaking with others.

According to the KBBI (Great Dictionary of the Indonesian Language), ikhlas means "clean-hearted". Therefore, the common human understanding of these daily phrases is that worship or helping others must be done "clean heart". This is the definition of ikhlas according to human standards. But what is the definition of ikhlas according to God?

Variations of "Ikhlas" in the Qur'an

Several verses in the Qur'an concerning ikhlas are often left untranslated or translated differently.

As "Sincere": In QS. Al-A'raf: 29, the word mukhlishin is translated as "sincere/ikhlash" in the context of "devoting ketaatan (obedience) sincerely to Him".

قُلۡ أَمَرَ رَبِّي بِٱلۡقِسۡطِۖ وَأَقِيمُواْ وُجُوهَكُمۡ عِندَ كُلِّ مَسۡجِدٖ وَٱدۡعُوهُ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَۚ كَمَا بَدَأَكُمۡ تَعُودُونَ

"Say, [O Muḥammad], "My Lord has ordered justice and that you direct yourselves [to the Qiblah] at every place [or time] of prostration, and invoke Him, sincere to Him in religion." Just as He originated you, you will return [to life]". (QS. Al-A'raf: 29)

As "Special": In QS. Al-Baqarah: 94, the word kholishoh is translated by the Ministry of Religious Affairs (Kemenag) as "special" or "exclusive" (specifically for you at the side of Allah, not for others).

قُلۡ إِن كَانَتۡ لَكُمُ ٱلدَّارُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةُ عِندَ ٱللَّهِ خَالِصَةٗ مِّن دُونِ ٱلنَّاسِ فَتَمَنَّوُاْ ٱلۡمَوۡتَ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰدِقِينَ

"Say: If you (think that) the abode of the Hereafter (paradise) is special for you with Allah, not for anyone else, then wish for death, if you are truthful.”. (QS. Al-Baqarah: 94)

As "Chosen": In QS. Yusuf: 54, the word astakhlishu is translated as "choosing" or "picking".

وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلِكُ ٱئۡتُونِي بِهِۦٓ أَسۡتَخۡلِصۡهُ لِنَفۡسِيۖ فَلَمَّا كَلَّمَهُۥ قَالَ إِنَّكَ ٱلۡيَوۡمَ لَدَيۡنَا مَكِينٌ أَمِينٞ

"And the king said: "Bring Joseph to me, so that I will choosen him as my closest person." So when the king had a conversation with him, he said: "Indeed, you (from) today will be a person of high position and trusted by our side." (QS. Yusuf: 54)

As "Separate": In QS. Yusuf: 80, the word kholashu is translated as "secluding themselves" or "separating themselves from others".

فَلَمَّا ٱسۡتَيَۡٔسُواْ مِنۡهُ خَلَصُواْ نَجِيّٗاۖ

"So when they despaired of Yusuf's (decision) they withdrew into themselves (separated) while discussing in whispers...". (QS. Yusuf: 80)

As "Pure": In QS. Al-Ankabut: 65, the word mukhlishin is translated as "pure" or "purifying".

فَإِذَا رَكِبُواْ فِي ٱلۡفُلۡكِ دَعَوُاْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ إِذَا هُمۡ يُشۡرِكُونَ

"So when they boarded the ship they prayed to Allah by purifying their obedience to Him; then when Allah rescued them to land, suddenly they (returned) to associating partners with (Allah)." (QS. Al-Ankabut: 65)

Redefining Ikhlas: Separation and Purity

The word "pure" is essentially the same as "separate," because something pure is not mixed with anything else. Interestingly, the Qur'an never seems to use the word ikhlas to mean "clean-hearted" in the way the KBBI defines it. This suggests a shift in meaning between the Arabic of the Qur'an and our mother tongue.

In Qur'anic linguistics, there is a principle called Musytarak, where one word can have various meanings. We can conclude that ikhlas carries several meanings, including:

  1. Special/Exclusive
  2. Chosen
  3. Separate (Pure)

According to Arabic lexicons (such as Lane's Lexicon), Ikhlas is derived from the root Kha-Lam-Shad ( خ - ل - ص ), which means:

  • Rendered clear, pure; clarified, purified, refined; separated, disentangled.
  • Saved, delivered.
  • Escaped, extricated himself, got free, rid of.

Essentially, it describes a condition of being separated from others or being released from a state of attachment and dependency, making that condition special or exclusive. This root shares similarities with the Latin clausus, which evolved into English words like close, clause, and clusivity (the root of exclusive and inclusive).

Ikhlas in Surah Al-Ikhlas

When we view Surah Al-Ikhlas through this lens, the meaning becomes much more precise. The attributes of Allah in this Surah signify His exclusivity from His creation:

  • Ahad (One): An exclusive attribute of Allah not shared by others.
  • As-Samad (The Eternal Refuge): All creation depends on Him, but He is independent of all. This is a state free from dependency an exclusive condition.
  • Neither begets nor is born: He is free from the bonds of lineage or ancestry. There is no cause preceding Him an exclusive condition.
  • None is comparable to Him: An exclusive attribute because He cannot be likened to creation.

Therefore, Ikhlas serves as a boundary, separator, or differentiation between Allah and His creation. In the Qur'an, its primary meaning is separation.

Thus, the meaning of Ikhlas in the Qur'an is primarily separation. This separation concerns the attributes of Allah in Surah Al Ikhlas which are different from those of His creatures. Separation can also be between chosen people (Prophets & Apostles) and other humans. Separation between what is Haq and what is false.

أَنزَلَ مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ فَسَالَتۡ أَوۡدِيَةُۢ بِقَدَرِهَا فَٱحۡتَمَلَ ٱلسَّيۡلُ زَبَدٗا رَّابِيٗاۖ وَمِمَّا يُوقِدُونَ عَلَيۡهِ فِي ٱلنَّارِ ٱبۡتِغَآءَ حِلۡيَةٍ أَوۡ مَتَٰعٖ زَبَدٞ مِّثۡلُهُۥۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡحَقَّ وَٱلۡبَٰطِلَۚ فَأَمَّا ٱلزَّبَدُ فَيَذۡهَبُ جُفَآءٗۖ وَأَمَّا مَا يَنفَعُ ٱلنَّاسَ فَيَمۡكُثُ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ كَذَٰلِكَ يَضۡرِبُ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡأَمۡثَالَ

"Allah has sent down water (rain) from the sky, so the water flows in the valleys according to their measurements, so the current carries floating foam. And from what (metal) they melt in the fire to make jewelry or tools, there is (also) foam like the foam of the current. Thus Allah makes a parable (for) the truthful and the false. As for the foam, it will disappear as something that is worthless; as for what benefits humans, it remains on earth. Thus Allah makes parables." (QS. Ar-Rad: 17)

Conclusion

Whether in worship or daily interactions, if our "ikhlas" follows God's standard, it means being "Exclusive/Special" following God's rules and being separate from human-made rules. An "Ikhlas" person is an exclusive, chosen, and separate individual because their way of thinking, acting, and judging is aligned with the ways of God.

Likewise, when we worship or engage in social interactions, if our "ikhlas" is standardized by Allah, it means "exclusive/special according to Allah's rules and separate from human rules."

Likewise, when we understand "ikhlas" as ascribed to a person, we can understand them as "exclusive/special, chosen, and separate from most people," because they think, act, and evaluate according to the ways of God or Allah SWT.

This way, we will no longer be trapped by the phrase "ikhlas" when someone says, "I give this sincerely," when in fact, their gift is merely a bribe, or when someone says, "Let me lead you," when in fact, their actions and leadership are far from the rules set by Allah.
