TARTIL, IQRA, TILAWAH

The word Tartil is mentioned four times in the Qur'an: twice in QS. Al-Furqan (25:32) and twice in QS. Al-Muzzammil (73:4).

According to the conventional definition in Fiqh (Islamic jurisprudence), Tartil is defined as the act of reciting the Qur'an slowly, calmly, and without haste, while fully observing the rules of Tajwid, such as makharijul huruf (articulation points), the characteristics of letters, and the rules of recitation (vowel length, thickness/thinness). This definition is largely based on QS. Al-Muzzammil 73:4:

أَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَرۡتِيلًا

"...And recite the Qur'an with measured recitation (tartila)."

From this common translation, the definition of Tartil is derived. However, if we look closer at the original Arabic text of that verse, there are two related words:

  1. Rattil (رَتِّلِ) = often translated as "read/recite"
  2. Tartila (تَرۡتِيلًا) = often translated as "slowly/measured"

Interestingly, why is Rattil translated as "read," when the specific Qur'anic word for "read" is actually "Iqra"?

Consider:

ٱقۡرَأۡ بِٱسۡمِ رَبِّكَ ٱلَّذِي خَلَقَ

"Read (Iqra) in the name of your Lord who created." (QS. Al-Alaq 96:1)

So, what does the word Tartil actually mean?

The Linguistic Approach: Tartil as "Coherence"

We cannot truly grasp the meaning of Tartil except through a linguistic (lughah) approach. Linguistically, Tartil is derived from the root letters "Ra – Ta – La", which means to arrange and organize parts neatly and systematically until a conclusion is reached. In modern terms, we call this "Coherence."

What is "Coherence"?

Coherence is the logical, unified, and consistent arrangement of parts so that they form a complete, harmonious, and clearly connected whole.

Therefore, when Allah commands humans to perform Tartil on the Qur'an, He is instructing us to arrange and connect one verse with another consistently. This ensures we form a complete meaning where verses do not contradict each other. This is the essence of Tartil.

If we apply this meaning, the translation of the verses would be:

أَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَرۡتِيلًا

"...And arrange the verses of the Qur'an in a complete and connected manner so that they become clear." (QS. Al-Muzzammil 73:4)

وَقَالَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَوۡلَا نُزِّلَ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانُ جُمۡلَةٗ وَٰحِدَةٗۚ كَذَٰلِكَ لِنُثَبِّتَ بِهِۦ فُؤَادَكَۖ وَرَتَّلۡنَٰهُ تَرۡتِيلٗا

"And those who disbelieve say, 'Why was the Qur'an not revealed to him all at once?' Thus [it is] that We may strengthen thereby your heart. And We have arranged it in a consistent, orderly, and connected structure (rattalnahu tartila)." (QS. Al-Furqan 25:32)

Example: The Creation of Man

To practice Tartil, consider the topic of human creation. One verse says man was created from dust/soil, while another says from emitted fluid (semen).

To reach a coherent conclusion (a complete and connected understanding), we cannot conclude that humans were carved from clay like a statue. If we did, it would contradict the verse about semen. To achieve Tartil, the "soil" in the verse must be understood as the "essence of soil" the nutrients from the earth that produce the plants consumed by humans, which eventually become semen.

Observe the connection:

  • "And of His signs is that He created you from dust (turab); then, suddenly you were human beings dispersing [throughout the earth]." (QS. Ar-Rum 30:20)
  • "And certainly did We create man from an extract (sulalah) of clay (thin)." (QS. Al-Mu’minun 23:12)
  • "...From a drop of semen (nuthfah) when it is emitted." (QS. An-Najm 53:46)

This systematic connecting of verses is what Tartil means linguistically. In fact, in Arabic dictionaries, the word Tartil is also associated with Artalu, which refers to Intellectual Intelligence (IQ). Applying this principle of Tartil can help solve personal, social, and national problems.

What about the Fiqh Definition?

Is the Fiqh definition reading slowly with Tajwid wrong? Not necessarily, but the Qur'an has a more specific term for the act of beautiful and proper recitation: "Tilawah."

Consider these verses:

رَبَّنَا وَٱبۡعَثۡ فِيهِمۡ رَسُولٗا مِّنۡهُمۡ يَتۡلُواْ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ءَايَٰتِكَ وَيُعَلِّمُهُمُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ وَٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ وَيُزَكِّيهِمۡۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

"Our Lord, and send among them a messenger from themselves who will recite (yatlu/tilawah) to them Your verses and teach them the Book and wisdom..." (QS. Al-Baqarah 2:129)

۞لَيۡسُواْ سَوَآءٗۗ مِّنۡ أَهۡلِ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ أُمَّةٞ قَآئِمَةٞ يَتۡلُونَ ءَايَٰتِ ٱللَّهِ ءَانَآءَ ٱلَّيۡلِ وَهُمۡ يَسۡجُدُونَ

"...Among the People of the Scripture is a community standing [in obedience], reciting (yatluna/tilawah) the verses of Allah during periods of the night and prostrating [in prayer]." (QS. Al-Imran 3:113)

By understanding the difference between Tilawah (proper recitation) and Tartil (logical/coherent structuring), we can interact with the Qur'an more deeply, both through our voices and our intellects.

Comparison Between Iqra, Tilawah, and Tartil

Simple Summary

  • Iqra is when we read the text or natural phenomena to obtain information..
  • Tilawah is when we recite the words beautifully and correctly.
  • Tartil is when we build a complete understanding by connecting the verses using our intellectual intelligence.
