IS FOLLOWING ISLAMIC COMMANDS WITHOUT KNOWING THE REASON OR MEANING GOOD OR BAD?
Conscious Faith vs Mechanical Faith in the Qur’anic Perspective
Many people practice religion in the same pattern: read a command, carry it out, done. At a glance it looks pious. But the Qur’an invites us to ask a deeper question: Does Allah want humans to merely obey, or to obey with awareness?
The Qur’an’s answer is firm: Islam is not an “auto-pilot system.” Islam is a system of consciousness.
In the Qur’an, faith (iman) is always associated with:
- ‘Ilm (knowledge)
- Tafakkur (deep thinking)
- Ta‘aqqul (using reason)
- Tadabbur (reflecting on meaning)
Allah repeatedly asks:
“Afalā ta‘qilūn?” – Will you not use your intellect?
“Afalā tatafakkarūn?” – Will you not think?
If faith were sufficient by mere following, these verses would not exist. The message is clear: Qur’anic faith is understanding faith, not imitative faith.
Practicing religion without understanding its reasons and meanings is called blind imitation. In modern terms: Blind Trust, not Smart Trust. Blind trust is fragile. As long as the figure being followed is respected, faith appears strong. When that figure falls, faith collapses with them.
The Qur’an describes such people:
"Indeed, We have created many of the jinn and mankind for Hell (because of their misguidance). They have qolbu with which they do not understand (the signs of Allah), eyes with which they do not see (the signs of Allah), and ears with which they do not hear (the signs of Allah). They are like cattle, even more misguided. They are the heedless ones".(QS Al-A‘raf 7:179)
This is not emotional insult. It is a spiritual diagnosis: intellect exists, but is unused.
Another verse is explicit:
وَلَا تَقۡفُ مَا لَيۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٌۚ إِنَّ ٱلسَّمۡعَ وَٱلۡبَصَرَ وَٱلۡفُؤَادَ كُلُّ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ كَانَ عَنۡهُ مَسُۡٔولٗا
"Do not follow that which you have no knowledge of. Verily, your hearing, your sight, and your conscience will all be questioned about it".(QS Al-Isra’ 17:36)
Meaning: It is incorrect to say, “I just follow the ustaz,” or “I just follow my parents,” or “I just follow tradition.” These are not accepted excuses before Allah. Humans were entrusted with intellect, and that intellect will be questioned.
When religion is practiced without awareness, a person turns into:
- Not a conscious subject → but a ritual object
- Not a thinking servant → but a spiritual robot
Yet the Qur’an evaluates worship not merely by movement, but by its impact.
True prayer is described:
"Recite what has been revealed to you of the Book (the Quran) and establish prayer. Indeed, prayer prevents from indecency and wrongdoing. And indeed, the remembrance of Allah (prayer) is greater (its priority over other acts of worship). And Allah is aware of what you do." (QS Al-‘Ankabut 29:45)
If prayer does not transform character, mindset, and one’s way of seeing life, then what occurs is only physical movement, not living worship.
Notice how the Qur’an gives commands:
- Fasting → so that you may become righteous (QS 2:183)
- Qisas (just law of retaliation) → so that life may be preserved (QS 2:179)
- Zakat → so wealth does not circulate only among the rich (QS 59:7)
Allah always gives wisdom (purpose), not merely technical instructions. Because humans are not machines. Humans are beings who need meaning.
Practicing religion without understanding its purpose is like:
Being told to go to a city, but not knowing the direction, the map, or the destination, yet feeling proud because “at least I’m walking.”
We may be moving, but away from the goal. The Qur’an was revealed as guidance (hudan), not merely a rulebook.
Following Islamic commands without knowing their meaning may be a starting step, but it is not the final goal. If we stop there, it becomes mechanical faith, not conscious faith. Mechanical faith is easily shaken, dry, and may turn into empty formalism.
What Allah wants:
Servants who obey because they understand, who submit with awareness, who worship knowing the direction and purpose. Islam is not a religion of imitation. Islam is a religion of consciousness.
Intellect is a trust. Understanding meaning is an obligation. Seeking wisdom is part of worship.
Because Allah is not building a line of holy robots.
Allah is shaping conscious human beings who know their Lord through understanding, not mere habit.
