IS IT TRUE THAT WHOEVER DIES SAYING “LAA ILAAHA ILLALLAH” IS GUARANTEED PARADISE?
Assalamu’alaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh
Allah SWT says:
“And We brought the Children of Israel across the sea, and Pharaoh and his soldiers pursued them in tyranny and enmity until, when drowning overtook him, he said, ‘I believe that there is no deity except that in whom the Children of Israel have believed, and I am of the Muslims". (Qur’an, Surah Yunus: 90)
In Surah Yunus verse 90, the Qur’an narrates how the Children of Israel crossed the sea, were pursued by Pharaoh and his army, and how Allah caused Pharaoh to drown. At the moment he was about to die, Pharaoh declared:
“There is no deity except the One in whom the Children of Israel have believed, and I am of those who submit (to Allah).”
Let us analyze this logically and carefully note the words in the verse:
- At the end of his life, Pharaoh believed in the God of the Children of Israel and claimed to be Muslim.
- The question is: Did Pharaoh enter Paradise?
The answer lies in the next verse:
“Now (you believe) ? And you had disobeyed before and were of the corrupters?” (Qur’an, Surah Yunus: 91)
The word “Āl-Āna” (Now?), with a prolonged tone, is used as an expression of rebuke or rejection, similar to how it is used in:
“And what can make you know what the Striking Calamity is?” (Surah Al-Haqqah: 3)
“The path of those upon whom You have bestowed favor, not of those who have earned Your anger or of those who go astray.” (Surah Al-Fatihah: 7)
Thus, “Āl-Āna” here implies “Is it only now?” — a rhetorical question that conveys rejection. Therefore, in Surah Yunus : 91, Allah questions Pharaoh in a tone of impossibility — meaning that Allah rejected Pharaoh’s declaration of faith at the moment of death.
Now, a new question arises:
• Why was it impossible or unacceptable?
The answer is found in the continuation of the verse:
“You disobeyed before and were among the corrupters.”
Let us narrow down the two key terms to reach the final conclusion:
a. عَصَيْتَ (ʿAsaita) = Disobedient
b. ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ (al-Mufsidīn) = Corrupters
Now let’s examine the consequences for such people.
a. The consequence of disobedience:
“But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a severe punishment.” (Surah Al-Muzzammil: 16)
Note: The word “فَعَصَىٰ” (he disobeyed) is the same root as “عَصَيْتَ” (you disobeyed).
b. The consequence of corruption:
“Those who disbelieved and hindered others from the way of Allah — We will add punishment upon punishment for them because they used to spread corruption.” (Surah An-Nahl: 88)
Notice: The word “يُفْسِدُونَ” (they spread corruption) comes from the same root as “ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ”.
From both verses, it’s clear that the consequence of disobedience and corruption is severe punishment — a punishment upon punishment.
Another question arises:
• Where is this severe punishment located?
“And when he turns away, he strives throughout the land to cause corruption therein and destroy crops and livestock. And Allah does not like corruption. And when it is said to him, ‘Fear Allah,’ pride in sin takes hold of him. Sufficient for him is Hellfire, and how wretched is the resting place.” (Surah Al-Baqarah: 205–206)
Notice: Verse 205 uses “ٱلْفَسَادَ” (corruption), the same root as “ٱلْمُفْسِدِينَ.”
Verse 206 clarifies that the place for such people is جَهَنَّمُ (Hellfire).
Thus, Pharaoh’s place is Hell (Jahannam).
🔹 Final Conclusion:
Whoever says “Laa ilaha illallah” at the moment of death — like Pharaoh did — is not automatically guaranteed Paradise. It depends on the person’s lifetime deeds. If that person lived in disobedience and corruption, Allah rejects that final declaration, and their place remains Hell. And what about someone who is not disobedient or corrupt — do they go straight to Paradise ? If we say “yes,” that would contradict the verse:
“There is none in the heavens and the earth but comes unto the Most Gracious (Allâh) as a slave. Verily He knows each one of them, and has counted them a full counting. And everyone of them will come to Him alone on the Day of Resurrection (without any helper, or protector or defender)". (Surah Maryam: 93–95)
Therefore, according to this verse, every person will have their deeds accounted for precisely. No one enters Paradise immediately; all will be judged according to their actions.
Then what about the Hadith which says:
“Whoever’s last words (at the time of death) are ‘Laa ilaha illallah’ will enter Paradise.” (Narrated by Abu Dawud)
Notice: The phrase “at the time of death” is often inserted in parentheses — it is not part of the original hadith text. The actual Arabic text says “Ākhiru Kalāmihi” (آخِرُ كَلَامِهِ) — meaning “his last words.” If we interpret this as “at the moment of death,” it would contradict the Qur’an, unless we understand it as “every word he speaks throughout life reflects the truth and principles of Allah.”
Hence, the redaction of hadith is correct — but our understanding of it has been mistaken.
